Sims graduated from Cheyney University in 1993 and was a member of the Wrestling team from 1988-1991. He is currently teaching at his Alma Mater, Saginaw High School in the state of Michigan; where he has also been the head wrestling coach. While at Cheyney, he was part of the first group of wresters that moved the program from club status to varsity and full recognition by the NCAA and was eventually respected nationwide. Sims was an All-Conference Wrestler in his junior year in the 158 pound weight classification. In his senior year, the wrestling team was ranked 20th in the nation in Division II. Their record was 18-2. During the summer while Sims was on campus he was an outstanding counselor in the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) hosted on the Cheyney University campus.
In 2000, he completed a Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership. In 2006, Roy received the Saginaw News "Crystal Apple" Award recognizing him as one of the top ten teachers in the county. Sims currently gives back to the community as a volunteer with the Family Youth Initiative Program in Saginaw. He is trained to mentor at risk youth and also youth whom are repeat offenders.
