Mary Smith-Jones transferred to Cheyney as a two-year Junior College All-American at Mercer County Community College in 1989.
In her first season, Smith averaged 11.6 points and 11.0 rebounds per game to help the Lady Wolves to a 19-9 record with a 9-3 conference mark. Cheyney finished second in the PSAC East, and advanced to the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament.
As a senior Mary Smith earned First-Team All-Conference honors while averaging 12.5 points and 13.8 rebounds per game. Smith eclipsed the 20 rebound plateau four-times with a season high of 23 accomplished on three different occasions.
