Affectionately known by all as Coach J, Johnson has been a fixture on the Cheyney campus for almost twenty years. Coach J started at Cheyney in 1986 as the Head Wrestling Coach. In the thirteen years that guided the program, he coached seven NCAA Division II All-American , two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Champions and an Academic All-American.

In 1996, Johnson was granted a leave of absence so that he could be Press Manager for Weight Lifting and Freestyle Wrestling at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. While working for the United States Olympic Committee, Johnson trained, scheduled and supervised Press Stewarts, Press Messengers and Volunteers.

Coach J has worn many hats during his tenure at the University. He was the Interim Director of Athletics (1997-1998), Interim Sports Information Director (1998-1999). During the 1997-1998 year he also served as the Project Administrator for the National Youth Sports Program. Presently, he served as the NCAA compliance Coordinator and Assistant Director of Financial Aid. In his current position he certifies students-athletes to participate in intercollegiate athletics and continually updates coaches on new NCCA rules and regulations. He also counsels students on available aid and scholarships. He processes PHEAA State Grants for students. He is alo responsible for on and off campus work study programs.

Coach J is a resident of Brookhaven, Pennsylvania and a graduate of Salem College,(Salem, WV). He is still an active member of the Black Coaches Associationa nd a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.
