Wolves Fall 12-10 in Sloppy Affair

Playing their only night game of the year and for the first time in a steady rain Cheyney (0-3:0-1) fell 12-10 to Lock Haven (2-1:1-0) in the PSAC East opener for each school.

The teams traded punts to start the game before the Wolves, went on a seven play 98-yard drive that was capped off by a Nahum Purdie 63 yard rush. After a Jewel Jones PAT the Wolves led 7-0. The Eagles knotted the game late in the first quarter after James Wilburn returned a punt to the Wolves 27. Two plays later Dillon Mazzoni connected with Jeremy Cornelius for a 26 yard reception. The Wolves would answer right back. The ensuing kick-off went out of bounds at the Wolves 44 yard line and after a Purdie rush of 22 yards; the Wolves had first and ten at the Eagles 34. Seven plays later Jones hit a 35 yard field goal, the longest of his career. The Wolves had a chance to tack on three more points late in the quarter but a Jones field goal attempt from 28 yards missed wide left.

The teams traded turnovers to start the second half. But on the Eagles second possession, sophomore place kicker Alex Boumerhi connected on a 46 yard field goal to tie the game. On the Wolves ensuing possession, the Wolves were forced to punt and a wet slippery ball went through the punters hands and recovered in the end-zone for a safety. The Eagles looked to add to their lead after returning the free kick to the Wolves 27 only to have a drive stall and miss a 51 yard field goal attempt.

Each team fumbled the ball twice to start the fourth quarter. With 6:41 to play the Wolves took over on their own 36 yard line. After four straight rushing plays capped by a Marcus Jones 36 yard scamper, the Wolves had a first and ten on the Lock Haven 14. The drive stalled on the Eagles 17 where the Wolves were lined up for the go ahead field goal. However, the snap could not be handled by holder and Eugene Moten picked up the ball and completed a pass to Shadeed Cheeseboro but the play fell one yard short of earning the Wolves a first down and Lock Haven took over on downs.

The Eagles took over with 2:54 to play and made a first down but eventually were forced to punt from their own 25. Cheyney got the ball on their own 40 with :27 to play. The Wolves were able to get down to the Eagles 39 before time ran out.

By the Numbers: Nahum Purdie rushed 11 times for 118 and Marcus Jones carried the ball 23 times for 106 yards. Signal caller Adler Thony was 8-19 for 104 yards with three interceptions. The Lock Haven quarterbacks were a combined 7-22 for 58 yards with three interceptions. Cheyney also coughed the ball up twice via the fumble while the Eagles had one lost fumble.
Cheyney won the statistical battle. The Wolves had more first downs 13-7; out rushed the Eagles 160-63, total offense favored the Wolves 276-121. The Wolves were whistled for seven more penalties than the Eagles. Cheyney also had a 10 minute time of possession advantage. CU's Isaiah Fleming led all players with 11 tackles.

Cheyney will host East Stroudsburg next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
