Isaiah Fleming had a monster game on the defensive side of the ball but it wasn't enough as the Cheyney Wolves (0-6:0-3) fell to Kutztown (1-5:1-2) 35-19. The junior from Wilmington, Delaware recorded 21 tackles including 14 solo tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss (21). He was also credited with two sacks (13) and two hurries.
The Golden Bears took the opening drive and marched 57 yards on 11 plays for the game's first score. On the Wolves first play from scrimmage, Kutztown was able to force a fumble and immediately improve their lead to 14-0 after quarterback Alec Werner rushed for 20 yards for a score. Werner completed a four yard pass to Kodi Reed for the first score of the game.
The Golden Bears started the second quarter like they did the first scoring on their opening drive. A Werner pass of 14 yards to Kellen Williams tacked another touchdown on the score board. Kutztown then executed an on-sides kick and took possession on their own 48 yard line. Three plays later the score was 28-0. The Wolves got on the board late in the second quarter. Rolando Ransom capped off a six play, 54 yard drive with a one-yard rush up the middle. The teams went into the locker room with Golden Bears leading 28-6.
The Wolves received the second half kick-off but on their third play from scrimmage coughed it up and Kutztown took over on the Wolves 26. Four plays later the Golden Bears added another touchdown. However, the Wolves were able to put seven more points on the scoreboard after a Tristan Dillon McCallum interception return of 37 yards. The Wolves took over at the Kutztown 39. After two complete passes and a KU penalty the Wolves were looking at a first and goal. Marcus Jones capped of the scoring drive with a one yard rush to make the score 35-13. The Wolves added to their score midway through the fourth quarter as Jones scampered seven yards for the game's final points.
By the Numbers: Cheyney signal caller Adler Thony was 13-23 for 134. His counterpart Alec Werner was 19-38 for 166 yards including three touchdowns and an interception. KU running back Curtis Wortham led all players with 20 carries for 154 yards.
The Wolves will host Millersville next Saturday at 1:00 PM. Kutztown will host Shippensburg.
