Mistakes Prove Costly

Box Score The Wolves opened PSAC East play by falling to the Pioneers of LIU Post 45-10 in O’Shields-Stevenson Stadium.

Blaze Wasserleben was the Wolves offensive threat as the quarterback rushed for 163 yards on 15 carries. He also had Cheyney lone touchdown on a run around right end for 70 yards. Earlier in the contest he had an 88 yard dash called back on a holding penalty.

His counterpart also was impressive completing 27 of 35 for 259 and two touchdowns while rushing for 13 yards on seven carries and one touchdown. Steve Laurino spread the over the field with five different receivers having three or more catches.

Post opened the scoring on their second possession of the afternoon. The drive was set up after the Wolves turned the ball over on their own 37 yard line. Five plays later Laurino found his brother Grayson in the end-zone on a 17 yard strike. Cheyney coughed up the ball four times.

The Wolves quickly answered with a 53 yard, 12 play drive but settled for a 34 yard field goal by Jewel Jones. Early in the second quarter the Wolves took over on downs at their own 12. On the first play of the drive Wasserleben went around left end 88 yards but the play was called back because of offensive holding. The Pioneers found the end-zone twice in the second quarter to push the lead to 22-3 at the half.

In the third quarter the Pioneers tacked on 10 more points before Wasserleben found the end-zone on a 78 yard keeper. Thirteen additional points in the fourth quarter rounded out the scoring.

Defensively the Wolves were led by Isaiah Fleming. The linebacker recorded 13 tackles including 2.5 for loss.

“We just made too many mistakes today. Blown coverages and turnovers came back to haunt us for the second week in arrow,” commented Head Coach Ken Lockard. “If Blaze’s 88 yard touchdown stands I think the game plays out a little different. It would have given us the lead 10-8 and then who knows what is going to happen.”

Next weekend the Wolves will travel to East Stroudsburg while the Pioneers host Bloomsburg.
