Linebacker Isaiah Fleming was credited with a season high 15 tackles but the Wolves fell 61-9 to undefeated Shippensburg, the seventh ranked team in the nation.
Things started well for the Wolves. Cheyney's Ernest Polite intercepted a Jeff Tomasetti pass on the Raiders second play from scrimmage at the Cheyney 20 yard line. However the Wolves were forced to punt on their first possession. After the punt the Raiders had great field position at the Cheyney 49 yard line. Six plays later Shippensburg posted the games first points. The Wolves were also forced to punt on their second possession and Tyler Wilkinson pinned the Raiders down at their own two yard line. However, the Raiders were able to orchestrate a 98 yard drive for a touchdown giving them a 14-0 lead. The Cheyney offense then found its rhythm, going on a patented 13 play drive that ate up almost eight minutes. The scoring drive was capped with a Blaze Wasserleben 22 yard scramble. However the PAT was blocked and the Wolves found themselves trailing 14-6. Shippensburg found the end-zone on their next three possessions to give the Red Raiders a 34-6 lead at half-time.
The Wolves were able to post three more points off the leg of Tyler Wilkinson. The senior converted a season and career high 43 yard field goal on the Wolves first possession of the second half. However, three more Shippensburg touchdowns in the third quarter put the game out of reach. Shippensburg added a final score in the fourth quarter. "This was probably the best offense we faced all year," commented Head Coach Ken Lockard.
NOTES: The turnover bug once again bit the Wolves. Cheyney fumbled four times and threw an interception. Cheyney only attempted four passes the entire afternoon. Meanwhile the Raiders three signal callers were 23-33 for 310 yards with five touchdowns and an interception. Cheyney's leading rusher was Marcus Jones. The junior was credited with 80 yards on 16 carries. The 61 points surrendered was a season high.
Cheyney concludes the 2012 season next week at winless Lock Haven.
