Wolves Show No Quit

Box Score Cheyney University fell 56-7 to Kutztown University in PSAC football action. Despite trailing 56-0 the Wolves were able to engineer a late fourth quarter scoring drive that consumed 83 yards on 16 plays to avoid the shut out. Jay Journigan powered up the middle from one yard out to give the Wolves their only points of the afternoon.

Marcus Jones and Justin Watkins combined for 105 yards on 28 carries to bolster most of the offensive load. Back-up quarterback Leroy Stanford played the entire second half and was five of 10 for 43 yards. Shannon Burch led the Cheyney defense with nine tackles including a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

The Wolves were knocking on the end-zone door early in the first quarter thanks in part to a Kutztown fumble on a punt return. The Wolves took over on the Kutztown 38 and march down to the one-yard line before fumbling on fourth and goal. Twelve plays and 3:28 later the Golden Bears put their first points on the scoreboard after Kevin Morton found Brett Fox in the corner of the end-zone. After the Wolves went three and out the Golden Bear tandem of Morton and Fox teamed up again for a score on a 68 yard pass play. Kutztown added three more touchdowns in the second quarter to extend the lead to 35-0 at half-time.

Kutztown posted three more touchdowns in the third quarter before Cheyney’s score late in the fourth for the final result.

Morton ended the day going 18-25 for 221 yards and three touchdowns. Fox was his favorite target catching 5 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Adrian Sterling led the Golden Bears rushing attack with 87 yards on eight carries and a touchdown. Zach Greenwald led the Kutztown defense with eight tackles.

Next week the Wolves travel to Millersville for a rare 3:30 kick-off. The Golden Bears return home to face Shippensburg at 1:05 pm.
