Box Score
Cheyney scored two fourth quarter touchdowns falling to cross-town neighbor West Chester 59-14.
Blaze Wasseerleben got the Wolves on the board early in the final quarter when he spun out of a tackle behind the line of scrimmage and rushed three yards up the middle to prevent a shutout. Later in the quarter, Josh Simmons scored his first collegiate touchdown after he caught a-yard 30 Wasserleben pass down the near sideline.
West Chester scored on their opening possession and the Wolves looked to take a page out of a series from last week. Cheyney was marching using their ball control offense. The Wolves started the ensuing drive on their own 19 and went 51 yards in 6:58 before they turned the ball over via an interception that was run back for a 70-yard touchdown. After the Wolves were forced to punt on their next possession, WCU once again found the end-zone to own a 21-0 lead as the first quarter came to an end.
“I didn’t see this coming,” commented head coach Ken Lockard. “I thought after last week we turned things around. We were doing what we needed to do. When we make mistakes they build on each other.” The Wolves offense is not designed to get back in game quickly. It is a ball control offense that is designed to control the clock.
The Golden Rams posted 28 unanswered points in the third quarter to take a 49-0 lead into the locker room.
The Wolves did out score the Golden Ram 14-10 in the second half. Isaiah Fleming led all players with 12 tackles (5 solo) and was credited with 1.5 tackles for loss.
Things don’t get any easier for the Wolves as they travel to nationally Shippensburg next week.
