GLEN MILLS, Pa. — Cheyney University women's volleyball delivered a competitive five-set effort Wednesday evening against Penn State Lehigh Valley, but the Wolves came up just short in a hard-fought 3-2 match.
The Executive Leadership Team (President
Aaron A. Walton and Interim Provost
Derrick Gilmore) were court-side cheering amongst an energetic student body. The Wolfettes sang the national anthem and DJ Unite introduced the starting line-ups and kept the crowd entertained.
Cheyney's first-set performance showed the Wolves' ability to start fast and apply pressure. With #10
Paris Coaxum (Captain), a senior middle, Cheyney established early rhythm behind its front-row presence and controlled the opening frame to earn the 25-17 win.
Penn State Lehigh Valley responded in the second set, but Cheyney continued to battle point-for-point. The Wolves pushed the set late before Penn State Lehigh Valley edged out a narrow 25-23 win to even the match at 1-1.
The third set followed a similar pattern, with Cheyney staying within striking distance throughout the frame. Despite another strong push from the Wolves, Penn State Lehigh Valley again escaped with a 25-23 set victory, putting Cheyney behind 2-1 in the match.
Facing elimination, Cheyney showed resilience in the fourth set. The Wolves answered with one of their strongest stretches of the night, reclaiming momentum and taking the set 25-19 to force a decisive fifth set.
The final set came down to the closing points. Cheyney continued to fight, but Penn State Lehigh Valley held off the Wolves for a 15-12 decision in the fifth set to secure the match.
Although the Wolves came up short, the match showed clear signs of growth for Cheyney. The team responded after tight second- and third-set losses, forced a fifth set, and showed the ability to compete through pressure moments. Under head coach
Kennetha Wallace, the Wolves will look to build on the effort, execution, and fight displayed throughout the match.
