GLEN MILLS, PA – Cheyney University volleyball closed the home portion of its schedule with a 3 sets to 1 victory over visiting Trinity Washington University on Senior Night, Thursday inside the Glen Mills School Rec Center.
Cheyney was paced by sophomore
Kennedy Jones (Havertown, PA, Haverford HS, ) who had 14 kills and served 10 aces, and senior
Nytasia Braxton (Camden, NJ, , Southeastern CC), who registered a career-high eight kills on the night.
After capturing the first set 25-15, the Wolves stumbled in set #2 falling 25-11, but following a senior night celebration for Braxton and
Hassana Coleman (Philadelphia,PA, Freire Charter HS, ), the (4-7) Wolves dominated the final two sets, allowing only 13 points to the Tigers (0-13), over the final two stanzas.
The first set was tight as the Wolves only held an 18-15 advantage, Braxton sparked Cheyney with back-to-back kills and the Wolves, with Junior
Julia Kinney-Bell (Hyattsville, MD, Chaminade Julienne Catholic HS, ) at the service line, scored the final seven points in taking an opening set victory 25-15.
The Tigers raced out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but the wolves responded and took a 7-6 lead. Trinity then re-took control of the set with a five-point run and were never headed pulling away for a 25-11 triumph to even the match at a set a piece.
The Wolves honored Coleman and Braxton in between sets and came out of the break in dominating fashion scoring the first seven points with freshman
Paris Coaxum (Philadelphia, PA) at the service line and forcing the Tigers to take a timeout. Trinity made a brief comeback with three straight points, but after a service error, Coleman toed the service line and the Wolves went on another nine-point streak to take a 16-3 advantage. Jones registered three kills and Kinney-Bell had two during the run. Jones started another run with a kill, and then added three aces as the Wolves won set three 25-7.
The fourth set saw the trend continue as Cheyney scored the first eight points, including three aces from Coaxum. The Wolves led 11-2 and then went on a 12-0 run, to take a 23-2 edge, featuring two kills from Braxton and five aces from Jones. After a short reply of a 4-0 run for the visitors, Braxton closed out the contest with back-to-back kills as the Wolves took the set 25-6 and the match 3-1.
Junior
Vita Fitch (York, PA, William Penn HS, Harrisburg Area CC) dished out 22 assists and added three kills, Coaxum finished with five kills and six aces, Kinney-Bell also had five kills for the Wolves.
Cheyney will close out the season with a pair of road contests. On Saturday October 28, Cheyney travels to Jenkintown, Pa for a noon first serve with Manor College and the Wolves close out 2023 with a trip to Newport News, Virginia for a 6:00 PM first serve against Virginia Peninsula Community College on November 1
