Tigers Late First Half Run Leads to Victory Over Wolves MBB

Cheyney, PA – Visiting Holy Family University used a 17-2 run to close out the first half and turn a two-point deficit into a 13-point halftime lead en route to 103-60 victory Saturday afternoon over Cheyney University in Men's Basketball action inside Cope Hall.

Freshman Jalen Boyd-Savage (Pennsauken, NJ, Paul VI HS, ) led three Wolves (2-7) player in double-figures with 16 points, but the Tigers (6-4) an NCAA Division II opponent, opened the second stanza with a 12-2 burst to pull away for the win.

Cheyney scored the first five points of the game on a jumper from freshman Dajer Muldrow (Jersey City, NJ, Trenton Catholic HS, ) broke the seal on the scoreboard, a putback by sophomore Kian Nixon (Upper Marlboro, MD, , Feather River CC) and a Boyd-Savage free-throw gave the Wolves a 5-0 edge after the first three minutes.

Aamir Hurst, who led all scorers with 26 points scored the Tigers first five points which was offset by two from the line for Boyd-Savage and another second chance basket from Nixon as Cheyney led 9-5 at 15-minute mark.
Holy Family who made 15-25 from beyond the arc, used consecutive three-pointers to take its first lead of the game 13-11, Muldrow brought Cheyney even, the Tigers responded with the next nine points to take a 22-13 edge. Back-to-back baskets from Nixon and a three-pointer from freshman Robert Keys (Philadelphia, PA, Paul Robeson HS, ) made it a 22-20 contest with 7:22 to play.

Cheyney trailed 27-22, when it went on an 8-1 run to take a 30-28 advantage with 4:14 to play in the first half. Boyd-Savage started the run with two from the charity stripe, followed by a jumper from Muldrow, Boyd-Savage hit from downtown, and Nixon made a free-throw as the Wolves regained the lead.

After the Tigers tied the game at 30-30, Boyd-Savage hit a turn around jumper to give Cheyney its final lead of the game. Hurst keyed an eight-point run, before Boyd-Savage was able to pull the Wolves with four at 38-34 with 38 ticks left on the clock. Hurst and the Tigers would take over with the final nine-points in the closing 29 seconds of the half to head to the break with a 47-34 lead.

Hurst led the Tigers with 23 points, while Boyd-Savage with 12 and Nixon, who scored all 11 of his points paced the Wolves. Muldrow scored six of his 11 points in the first half.

Cheyney is back in action on Wednesday evening at Goldey-Beacom College with the tipoff scheduled for 6 PM in Wilmington, Delaware.
