Lincoln, PA. – The Battle of the Firsts closed out the inaugural HBCU Gameday Classic men's basketball event inside Manuel Rivero Gymnasium on the campus of Lincoln University Sunday afternoon and evening.
The host Lions improved to 5-2 on the season with an 86-41 victory over the Wolves (2-4).
Before the game a moment of silence was held for Eugene Lett Sr., who passed away unexpectedly on November 20. Mr. Lett, as he was known, was a graduate of both Cheyney and Lincoln, and was a pillar in in basketball and recreation in west Philadelphia. His son Gene Lett Jr. is also a graduate of both universities and has coached at both schools also. Another son Nasir is a sophomore on the Lincoln and started in the game, who received the loudest cheer of the contest when he scored early on.
The Lincoln players and staff all wore a shirt with Eugene Lett Sr. picture on the front and RIP Mr. Lett on the back. Cheyney Head Coach Terrell Stokes also wore the shirt to honor his cousin.
Lincoln and Bluefield State each captured two victories over the weekend, while University of the District of Columbia lost on a free-throw on Saturday to Lincoln with .09 seconds remaining on Saturday, and then fell 96-95 on Sunday in overtime.
Sophomore Kian Nixon had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, freshman Jalen Boyd-Savage led Cheyney with 13 points.
Gabe Harris scored 17 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dominated the paint with eight blocks to lead the Lions. Korey Williams,was named tournament MVP after scoring 40 points over the weekend.
The Wolves will return to action on Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM vs Washington Adventist University, following the women's game, which is scheduled for a 5:30 PM tipoff.
