CHEYNEY, PA. – TaKayla Ellis scored 22 points to lead the Cheyney University women's basketball team to a 65-61 victory over Lock Haven University, Wednesday night in PSAC East action inside Cope Hall.
Ellis, who went over the 1,000 career-point plateau on Saturday, connected on three 3-point shots to push her Cheyney (6-21, 4-17 PSAC El record total to 157, added seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Fr. Octavia Hawkins came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points, including a career-high three 3-pointers, and matched her career-bests with four rebounds and three assists in helping the Lady Wolves to a fourth consecutive win over the Bald Eagles.
Kayla Henderson led three Lock Haven (5-20, 4-17 PSAC E) players who reached double figures in scoring with 16 points.
The Bald Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held a 16-7 advantage after the first ten minutes.
The Wolves trailed 20-12 when it used an 11-2 run to take its first lead of the game at 23-22.
Briana Hedgepeth started the run with two free-throws, then Ellis and Hawkins connected from downtown to even the game at the 4:49 mark of the second quarter. A basket from Rileigh Devine restored the lead briefly for the Bald Eagles, but Gianni Hill made it three in a row from beyond the arc to give Cheyney its first lead of the game at the 4:04 mark.
Cheyney outscored Lock Haven 24-12 in the second period to take a 31-28 lead at the half.
The lead see-sawed back and forth in the third period, another triple from Hill gave Cheyney the lead with 1:35 to play and the Wolves carried a slim 44-42 edge heading to the fourth quarter.
The Bald Eagles opened the final period with a 9-0 run to take a 51-44 lead with 6:24 remaining.
Hawkins would go on a personal five-point run to bring Cheyney within two 51-49 at the 5:21 mark, with the lead back to five at 54-49 Ellis connected from downtown then tied the game 54-54 with two free-throws on her own five-point run.
The score was tied at 57-57, when Ellis put Cheyney ahead to stay and sparked a 7-0 run with 1:49 remaining.
Khadijah Pearson made a triple and Ellis made two from the charity stripe to give Cheyney its largest lead of the game 64-57 with 19 seconds remaining.
Ellis then sealed the victory with a free-throw with nine second left.
Ja'la Walker pulled down a game and career-high 11 rebounds and scored six points with three steals, two assists and two blocks, Hill matched Ellis and Hawkins with three 3-point shots and finished with nine points Hedgepeth added eight points and five rebounds.
The Wolves shot 17-22 (.773) from the free-throw line, while the Bald Eagles connected on only 10-25 (.40) attempts.
Cheyney will close out the 2017-18 season with a Senior Day contest with Mansfield tipping off at 1:00 PM inside Cope Hall.
Ellis, Hedgepeth, Yasmine Dorrielan and Ceani Beaden are the four Wolves seniors who will be honored in a pre-game ceremony beginning at 12:50.
