CHEYNEY, Pa. - R-Jr. Brian Hedgepeth scored a career-high 20 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds to record her first career-double-double, but it was not enough as visiting Mansfield University held on for a 63-55 victory, to earn a spot in the PSAC Playoffs, on Saturday afternoon in PSAC East action inside Cope Hall.
Sr. Yasmine Dorrielan also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, Sr. TaKayla Ellis socred 13 points and grabbed four rebounds with two assists as the three were honored in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Day.
Mia Leonard registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the Mountaineers to a sixth place finish in the east and a match-up at Millersville on Monday night to open the post-season.
Hedgepeth and Dorrielan each converted layups to give Cheyney a 4-3 lead, a layup from Leonard put Mansfield ahead to stay, and sparked a 22-4 run that saw the Mountaineers lead by 175 25-8 with 7:46 to play in the first half.
Hedgepeth went on a person seven-point run, but Cheyney still trailed 30-19 at the break.
Mansfield led 42-30 heading to the fourth and 46-37 at the 8:19 mark, when the Wolves went on a 10-1 run to bring the crowd to its feet and pull within a single point.
Ellis and Hedgepeth made layups and Gianni Hill connected from downtown and then found Drazana Vulic for a basket to make it a 47-46 contest with 3:56 to play.
The Mountaineers were clinging to a three-point lead, when Paige Whitfield converted an offensive rebound into a three-point shot to push the lead out to six and help to secure the victory.
Cheyney finishes the season with six victories, while Mansfield has eight wins and plays at Millersville on Monday night.
