Kyra Hines-Allen scored a season-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Cheyney University women's basketball team to its second consecutive PSAC East victory, 78-62 Tuesday night inside Cope Hall.
TaKayla Ellis came off the bench to add 16 points including 4-of-5 on three point shots for the Wolves (4-19, 2-17 PSAC E).
Amber Genwright led Cheyney with seven assists to go with 13 points and
Aerie DeJesus chipped in with 11 points and a team-high three steals.
Natalya Lee led the Golden Bears (9-14, 61-3 PSAC E) with 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
For the second game in-a-row Cheyney built a large first period lead. Tuesday night the Wolves led 18-9 with 3:13 to play in the first, but Kutztown would score the final seven points of the period to close the gap to 18-16 after the first.
DeJesus was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field including a three-point shot to lead the Wolves with seven points, while
Adriene Small who finished with a game-high 10 rebounds, grabbed five boards in the first period.
The Golden Bears (9-14, 6-13 PSAC E) opened the second with first seven points to extend its run to 14-0 over seven minutes of action, to lead 23-18.
Genwright scored on a layup to end the Cheyney drought, but Kutztown pushed its advantage up to seven at 27-20.
Ellis then took over from downtown. The Sophomore made back-to-back three's to cut the deficit to three at 29-26, and with the game tied and time running out in the first half she connected again to give the Wolves the 35-32 lead at the break.
Ellis mad all four of her three-point attempts to lead all scorers with 12 points in the first half. Kelsey Watson paced Kutztown with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Wolves trailed 43-41 midway through the third period when it took the lead for good with an 8-0 run.
Cheyney made six straight free-throws and Marlon Herring scored on layup from Hines-Allen to give the Wolves a 49-43 lead with 3:28 to play in the third.
Cheyney went 11-of-12 from the free-throw line to extend its lead to 54-47 after three periods.
The Wolves led by four (58-54) when they went on a 15-2 run to build a 17-point lead and end the suspense.
Small started the run with a jump shot and Hines-Allen scored seven points during in the outburst.
Due to the postponement of the game on Monday, the Wolves play back-to-back games when they travel to take on crosstown rival West Chester University
tomorrow night with the tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
