CHEYNEY, Pa. – Sr. Juwan Mullen scored 21 points, and Sr. Eugene Lett added 16 points, but it was not enough to overcome the balanced attack of visiting Shippensburg University as the Raiders prevailed 84-66 in PSAC East men's basketball action Saturday afternoon inside Alfred Cope Hall.
Lett, who was coming off a career-high 35-point performance on Wednesday at Lock Haven, made his only two three-point shots and added a team- high six rebounds for the Wolves (2-19, 1-17 PSAC E).
Rafiq Marshall led Cheyney with four assists, grabbed five rebound and went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc en route to an 11-point performance.
Mullen scored 17 second half points and was 10-16 from the field with many dazzling drives to the basket.
Shippensburg (16-8, 13-7 PSAC E), who scored the first nine points of the game and never trailed in the contest, were led by a double-double from Tony Ellis who scored 19-points and grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds. Justin McCarther come off the bench to score a team-high 21 points, Dustin Sleva added 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists and Antonio Kellum had 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Raiders who held a 45-28 edge off the boards.
Cheyney cut a once 14-point first half deficit down to seven at the break by scoring the final six points of the half on jumpers from; Mechael Greene, Khaalis Carter and Obafemi Ajayi and trailed 32-25 at the break.
Lett paced the Wolves with 10 first half point, which was matched by Sleva and Ellis for the Raiders.
Cheyney trailed 36-28 with 17:54 to play, when it went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead down to one.
Marshall hit a three, Mullen added a layup, Kellum countered with a basket for Ship, Craig McGlond grabbed an offensive rebound and converted into a layup and Mullen brought crowd to its feet with a layup to make it a one-point contest with 15:21 remaining.
The Raider responded with an eight-point outburst to build the lead back up to nine. Marshall would connect from downtown and another driving bucket from Mullen brought the Wolves to within three at 46-42 with 12:55 to play.
After Shippensburg pushed the lead up to 11, the Wolves scored five straight on a layup by Lett and another Marshall three, but Cheyney could get no closer as the Raiders pulled away late for the victory.
The Wolves host Kutztown University, on Monday night at 7:30 inside Cope Hall, in a game that was originally scheduled for Jan. 23, but was postponed due to the snow storm.
