DOVER, Del. – Sr.
Juwan Mullen from nearby Seaford, Del., scored a career-high 28 points, but host Division I Delaware State University defeated Cheyney University 86-70 Monday night inside Memorial Hall.
Basir Fulmore added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Wolves who kept the game close in the first half and trailed by only two at 44-42 at the break.
The Hornets led 38-35 with 3:56 to play in the first half when Cheyney went on a 15-2 run to tie the game at 40-40 with 57 seconds left in the half.
Mullen started the comeback with a three-pointer,
Imir Bailey followed with a two free-throws and a layup from
Craig McGlond cut the deficit to five (38-33) at the 2:28 mark.
The Hornets added two from the line, then Fulmore made two from the charity stripe, Mullen scored four straight cut the lead to one at 40-39, and Fulmore made another free-throw to tie the contest at 40-40.
Mullen led all scorers with 17 first-half points, Fulmore added seven and McGlond led the way with four rebounds.
Cheyney did not commit a turnover in the first half and forced eight DSU turnovers.
The Wolves hung tough through the first four minutes and trailed by only four at 50-46 following two layups from Bailey.
The Hornets took control with a 32-13 run over the next 10 minutes.
Cheyney returns to PSAC East action on Wednesday night when it travels to Millersville with the tipoff scheduled for 7:30 PM.
