CHEYNEY, Pa. – Kyra Hines-Allen finished with a team-high 15 points, but the Cheyney University women's basketball team fell to crosstown rival West Chester University 60-54 Wednesday night in PSAC East action inside Alfred Cope Hall.
The Wolves (2-13, 0-11 PSAC East) held a 31-25 lead after the first 20 minutes. Cheyney trailed by five, 21-16, at the 7:22 mark of the second period when it turned the game around with at 13-to-0 run to take an eight point lead at 29-21 with 1:47 left in the half.
Amber Genwright hit back-to-back three-point shots, Hines-Allen then converted two layups and Briana Hedgepeth gave Wolves the eight point advantage with a jumper from the baseline.
The Golden Rams (10-5, 7-4 PSAC East) scored the next four points, but Adriene Small made a layup as the half was ending to give Cheyney the 31-25 half-time lead.
West Chester opened the second half with a 9-to-0 run to take a 34-31 edge with 5:48 left in the third period.
Aerie DeJesus ended the run with a driving layup and Small gave the Wolves the lead again with layup from Shania Stamper with 3:59 left in the quarter.
Each team scored, then the Golden Rams closed the period with a 6-to-0 run and led 42-37 heading to the final period.
After a West Chester free-throw pushed the lead to six, Stamper made a layup and Hines-Allen made a free-throw to cut the deficit down to three at 43-40 with 7:44 to play.
A six-point run gave West Chester a nine point edge and the Golden Rams would lead by as many as 12, but the Wolves would not go quietly.
Genwright made two from the charity stripe, Hines-Allen made a steal and a layup and DeJesus connected from beyond the arc to trim the lead to only five at 57-52 with 24 seconds left.
Dallas Ely, who finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, made three-of-four free-throws to offset a Genwright layup to close out the scoring.
Genwright scored 12 points, Small came off the bench to chip in with eight, as Cheyney outscored West Chester 15-to-0 in bench points.
Marlon Herring led the Wolves with nine rebounds and three blocks and added five-points, while DeJesus had a team-high three steals to go with seven points.
The Wolves head to Shippensburg University for another PSAC East contest on Saturday at 1 p.m.
