SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Cheyney University Sr. guard,
Aerie DeJesus netted a season-high 20 points, but it was not enough as Shippensburg University picked up the 83-65 victory Saturday afternoon in PSAC East women's basketball action inside Heiges Field House.
The Wolves (2-14, 0-12 PSAC East) jumped out to a 7-to-1 advantage, but the Raiders (15-2, 11-2 PSAC East) responded with a seven point run of its own and a first quarter that saw seven lead changes and three ties concluded with the scored tied at 17-17.
The game was tied at 19-19, when Shippensburg took the lead for good with a 6-to-0 run, to move in front 25-19 with 7:27 left in the second period.
A DeJesus three-pointer cut the lead in half, but the Raiders ended the quarter on a 19-to-9 run.
Shippensburg connected on 14-17 from the free-throw line in the first half and built a 44-31 lead behind 16, of her game-high 24, points from Morgan Griffith going to the break.
Kyra Hines-Allenand DeJesus each scored six first half points and
Shania Stamper scored five.
DeJesus shot 7-of-13 from the field, grabbed eight rebounds, and also had two assists and two steals.
Amber Genwright and
TaKayla Ellis each added 10 points, with Genwright dishing out a team-high four assists.
Marlon Herring pulled-down a team-best 10 rebounds, while Hines-Allen ended with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Wolves return home for a pair of PSAC East contests this week. On Wednesday Cheyney will host Bloomsburg University at 6:00 p.m., and on Friday Kutztown comes to Cope Hall for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
