CHEYNEY, Pa -
TaKayla Ellis matched her career-high with 20 points and the Cheyney University women's basketball team led Slippery Rock University 64-62 with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter, but The Rock reeled off the next nine points to take the victory 71-66 in PSAC action Saturday afternoon inside Alfred Cope Hall.
The Rock (7-4, 4-1 PSAC W) tied the game with two free-throws and took the lead for good on a three-point shot by Krista Pietropola with 28 seconds remaining.
Kyra Hines-Allen added 16 points for the Wolves (0-7, 0-5 PSAC E), who had Cope Hall rocking with a second half comeback after trailing by 10 at the break.Audrey Stapleton hit a three-point shot to start the third quarter for The Rock to make the score 43-30. Ellis started the comeback with a free-throw then her three brought the crowd to its feet.
After two Slippery Rock free-throws, Hines-Allen and
Amber Genwright scored back to back layups to make it a 47-38 game midway through the third period.
A free-throw by Hines-Allen was followed by a forced turnover, then
Shania Stamper canned a three-pointer from the corner and was fouled. Stamper converted the four-point play and the Wolves trailed by only four as the crowd went wild.
Aerie DeJesus would cut the lead in half with two free-throws, and Genwright would make it a one-point contest at 47-46.
Ellis then grabbed a defensive rebound and dribbled the length of the court and hit a pull-up three-pointer to put Cheyney up 49-47 with 2:39 remaining in the third period.
A basket by Ciara Patterson would tie the game for Slippery Rock, but Genwright found Ellis open for another trey and she connected to give the Wolves a three-point advantage.
Hines-Allen added a free-throw to give Cheyney a four-point edge, its largest lead of the day, at 53-49.
Patterson scored again to cut the lead to two, Hines-Allen would re-establish the four-point lead with a layup and The Rock would close out the scoring in the third and make it a 55-53 Wolves lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Rock scored the first four points of the final period to regain the edge, but CU responded with a steal and a layup by DeJesus to knot the game at 57-57 with 8:20 to play.
Five free-throws gave Slippery Rock a 62-57.
A steal by Hines-Allen led to a DeJesus layup and when Genwright stepped into a three from the top of the key the game was deadlocked at 62-62.
Adriene Small, would make it seven straight points for the Wolves, on a feed from Ellis, to give Cheyney a 64-62 lead with 2:37 remaining.
Mallory Heinle grabbed her own rebound and was fouled with 1:22 showing on the clock. She converted both free-throws to tie the game and set the stage for the go ahead triple by Pietropola.
Four more made free-throws by The Rock and a layup at the buzzer by Ellis ended the scoring.
The Wolves return to action on Friday Dec. 11 at 6:00 p.m. when they host Virginia State University in a non-conference game inside Cope Hall.
