CHEYNEY, Pa. - Aerie DeJesus stole the ball and scored to break a 47-47 tie with 46 seconds remaining give the Cheyney University women's basketball team a 49-47 lead as they went on to capture their first victory of the season 51-48 over visiting Virginia State University Friday night inside of Alfred Cope Hall.
DeJesus scored a career-high 16 points and
Kyra Hines-Allen scored 13 points, six of which came in the fourth period. Hines-Allen went four-of-four from the free-throw line in the fourth and hit a left handed layup with 11 seconds remaining to put the Wolves (1-7) up by three at 51-48.
Cheyney led 40-31 heading into the final period, following a 17-to-9 scoring edge in the third.
Adriene Small, who finished with five points and seven rebounds, converted a pass from DeJesus to open the fourth and give the Wolves its largest lead of the game 42-31.
The Trojans (2-5) responded with an eight-point run to cut the deficit to three at 42-39 with 6:16 left to play. The teams did not score again until Hines-Allen made two from the line with 4:44 showing on the clock.
Virginia State then made six consecutive free-throws to take a one point lead at 45-44 with 3:06 remaining.
Hines-Allen put the Wolves back on top with two from the charity stripe with 2:46 to play. Small would up the lead to two, 47-45 with a free-throw, but Domonique Hagins tied the game with a driving layup with 1:19 on the clock.
A Cheyney miss was rebounded by the Trojans, but DeJesus stole the ball and made the layup to put the Wolves up 49-47 with 46 second left.
Hagins was fouled and made the first free-throw to cut the lead to one, but a lane violation gave the ball back to the Wolves with a 49-48 lead.
Hines-Allen then dribbled to the left from the free-throw line and scored with a left-handed layup to make it a 51-48 game.
Virginia State called a time-out with eight seconds left, but were not able to get off a shot before time expired.
Cheyney trailed by six points with under a minute to play in the first period, but knotted the contest at 12-12 following back-to-back three-pointers from
Amber Genwright and DeJesus.
Neither team could gain a lead larger than four in the second period, the Wolves held a 23-22 edge heading to half-time.
The game was tied at 24-24, when DeJesus and Genwright combined to make three treys in one-minute and twenty-seconds to give the Wolves a 33-26 lead with 6:24 left in the third period.
Cheyney led 35-31 with 2:39 to play in the third, when DeJesus started a five-point run, to close out the quarter. She grabbed a rebound and went the length of the court to score on a layup, Genwright made a free-throw and
Shania Stamper hit a twisting layup with six seconds left to give the Wolves a 40-31 lead after three.
Marlon Herring grabbed eight rebounds to lead CU, Stamper had seven and each scored four points. Genwright finished with seven points, four rebounds and a team-high three assists. DeJesus added three steals, three rebounds and two assists to her nights work.
The Wolves head to New Castle, Delaware to take on Wilmington University on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. in its final non-conference game of the season.
