Lady Wolves Steal Victory at Wilmington; 60-59

NEWARK, Del. - Marlon Herring's steal led to a free-throw with 5.4 seconds remaining to complete the comeback as the Cheyney University women's basketball team scored the final eight points of the game in a 60-59 non-league victory at Wilmington University Monday night inside the WU Athletic Complex.

The Wolves (2-7) trailed 59-52 with 1:35 showing on the clock, but Amber Genwright nailed back-to-back three's and went on a personal seven-point run to even the contest at 59-59 with a free-throw with 22 seconds remaining.

The Wildcats (6-5) tried to get the ball inside, but Herring picked off the pass, her seventh steal of the game, and was fouled.

The freshman stepped to the line and connected on the first free-throw to give the Wolves the 60-59 lead. Her second shot bounced off into the corner and by the time Wilmington could not get a shot off before time expired, as CU captured its second consecutive win.

Genwright led the way with 12 of her season-high 17 points coming in the fourth period. Shania Stamper doubled her career-high with 14 points, Kyra Hines-Allen added 10 points and Herring had 10 rebounds to go with four points and seven steals.

Stamper, Aerie DeJesus and TaKayla Ellis all made three point shots for the Wolves first nine points of the game, to help Cheyney to a 13-10 lead after the first ten minutes.

The Wolves led by one at 15-14 when Ellis made two free-throws to ignite a 12-2 run as Cheyney built a 27-16 lead with 1:05 left in the second quarter.

Genwright's three pushed the lead to six 20-14, the Wildcats scored to cut the deficit to four. DeJesus and Stamper made layups and Herring scored and converted a three-point play after she was fouled to give the Wolves the 11-point edge 27-16.

Jordan Hawkins and Lindsay Bradford each scored for Wilmington before the half, and CU went to the break with a 27-20 edge.

Hawkins pulled down a school record 25 rebounds to go with a game-high 18 points and six blocks as she and Bradford, who added 15 points and six rebounds, controlled the paint for the Wildcats.

The third period belonged to Hawkins and Bradford as they combined to score 19-straight Wildcat points and lead Wilmington to a 27-13 advantage in the third and a 47-40 lead heading to the fourth.

The Wolves trailed 53-44 with 6:50 left when Stamper made a free-throw, Genwright then scored five-straight with her first of three from beyond the arc in the fourth, and a layup with 5:28 to play made it a 53-50 game.

Hawkins and Adriene Small exchanged baskets, then the Wildcats built the lead back to seven at 59-52 with 3:47 left on the clock.

The scored stayed the same until Genwright took over with back-to-back three's to set the stage for the finish.

Hines-Allen, who scored eight of her ten points in the second half, is now just 14 points away from 1,000.

She will have an opportunity to reach the 1,000-point plateau at home on Wednesday night when the Wolves host Millersville at 6:00 p.m.

Game Notes: Cheyney forced a season-best 28 turnovers and recorded a season-high with 22 steals...Wilmington did not make a thee-point shot in six attempts, the second time this season an opponnent has not mad a three-point shot (12/4 vs Cal, PA.)...Shania Stamper career-high 14 points...Marlon Herring career-high in rebounds (10) and steals (7)...Cheyney is 2-0 when holding its opponents to under 60 points.
