Juniors Send Seniors Off with Five in a Row

Box Score

The Wolves got career highs of 29 points from Rashaad Slappy and 28 from Deshawn Curtis as the pair of juniors led Cheyney (14-12:12-10) to a 92-83 victory over cross-town rival West Chester (19-7:17-5).

It was a passing of the torch sort to speak from seniors Jason Sabb and Jayvon Beaty who were recognized in a pre-game ceremony. Sabb ended the game with 12 points and four steals while Beaty chipped in eight points and was credited with two blocks.

The first half was a back and forth affair with neither school owning more than a six point lead. Owning a four point lead at half-time, the Wolves started the second half with a 10-2 run to push the advantage to 12, 53-40. With the Wolves holding onto a 58-48 advantage the Golden Rams went on a 10-2 to cut the deficit to a deuce. After a pair of free throws by Troy Hockaday (14 points) the game was knotted at 69. Twenty seconds later the Golden Rams had their first lead of the second half. With WCU leading 73-69, Slappy scored the next five points and Beaty and Curtis added buckets to erase the four point deficit and turn it into a five point lead. The Golden Rams were able to cut the lead to one on two occasions in the final two minutes but could not get over the hump. Cheyney was a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe in the final 2:07.

“This was like our PSAC playoffs”, commented Coach Dom Stephens. His team has won five in a row. “It was a play-off atmosphere in there tonight. I’ve been here nine seasons and this was one of the best home crowds we have ever had.”
