Cheyney Men's Basketball Opens 2026–27 Season with Road Battle Against Morgan State

BALTIMORE, MD — Cheyney University men's basketball opened its 2026–27 season Monday evening against NCAA Division I opponent Morgan State University, falling 103-52 at Hill Field House. The road contest provided the Wolves with an early test against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) competition as the program begins its second season under Head Coach Jordan Bushrod.

Cheyney opened the contest with a three-pointer from #13 Treshawn Cody, taking an early 3-0 lead. Morgan State responded with its offensive pressure, eventually taking control of the opening half. The Wolves continued to compete but entered halftime trailing 50-25. Cheyney added 27 points in the second half, receiving valuable contributions from its reserves despite Morgan State extending its advantage.

#5 Steven Hill and #21 Paul Lindsay II led Cheyney's offense with 10 points each off the bench. Hill shot 4-of-10 from the field while adding four rebounds, while Lindsay connected on two three-pointers. #2 S.J. Hutchinson contributed nine points, and #7 Nafis Dubose added eight points, five rebounds, and two assists, converting eight of his nine free-throw attempts.

The Wolves received 33 points from their bench, accounting for more than 63 percent of their total offensive production. Cheyney also collected 13 offensive rebounds and converted those opportunities into 15 second-chance points. Cody and Dubose each finished with five rebounds, while Cody added two steals.

Morgan State's advantage came through its offensive efficiency and interior presence. The Bears shot 50.7 percent from the field and held a 62-34 rebounding advantage. Cheyney finished shooting 23.9 percent from the floor, highlighting areas of execution and offensive consistency that the Wolves will look to improve as the season progresses.

Despite the outcome, the season opener provided Cheyney with an opportunity to evaluate its personnel, establish rotations, and gain valuable experience against Division I competition. The production from the Wolves' reserves offered an encouraging contribution as the program continues developing its competitive identity.

Head Coach Jordan Bushrod will look to use the experience from Monday's contest to strengthen the Wolves' execution, defensive consistency, and overall team performance as Cheyney prepares for another challenging road matchup against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks on Saturday, November 7, in Princess Anne, Maryland.

Following the matchup against UMES, Cheyney will turn its attention to one of its most anticipated games of the season: the historic rivalry against the Lincoln University Lions on Wednesday, November 11, in Philadelphia.

The rivalry between Cheyney and Lincoln, two of the nation's oldest historically Black institutions, represents more than basketball. It is a celebration of tradition, institutional pride, and the shared legacy of HBCU athletics.

With two significant matchups ahead, the Wolves will look to apply the lessons learned from their season opener as they continue building toward a competitive 2026–27 campaign.
