Paris Coaxum (Philadelphia, PA) recorded a season high 10 kills and eight aces to help lead the Cheyney women's volleyball team to its third victory in its last four matches, in three sets over visiting Manor College on Monday night inside the Glen Mills Schools Rec Center.
The Wolves (3-4) pulled away in the opening set as Coaxum served Cheyney to a 7-1 advantage including four aces, the freshman from Philadelphia then closed the set with two more aces as the Wolves took the first stanza 25-9.
Cheyney fell behind 10-9 in the second set, before taking control with a five-point run started by a kill from junior
Jireh Kelly (Salisbury, MD, Parkside, HS), Coaxum added two kills and junior
Vita Fitch (York, PA, William Penn HS, Harrisburg Area CC) closed the run with a pair of aces. Sophomore
Kennedy Jones (Havertown, PA, Haverford HS ) finished off the set with three aces as the Wolves captured set 25-15.
The third frame saw Manor (0-4) keep the score close and the BlueJays led 7-6 before a Kelly kill from Fitch, who recorded a game-high 19 assists on the night, evened the set and brought senior
Hassana Coleman (Philadelphia,PA, Freire Charter HS) to the service line. Coleman recorded six aces in eight serves and the Wolves took a 15-7 lead en route to a 25-14 final to close out the match.
Cheyney will look to even its record at 4-4 when it hosts Virginia Peninsula Community College on Thursday night at Glen Mills, with the first serve scheduled for 6:00 PM.
