BUFFALO, NY – Cheyney University women's basketball, under the tutelage of first year head coach Alishia Mosley, made its long-awaited return to competitive action over the weekend at the Bobcat Bash, hosted by Bryant and Stratton, Buffalo campus and held at the Buffalo State Arena.
The Wolves dropped the opener to Carlow University (3-1) on Saturday evening 73-61 to mark its first game action since February of 2020. Senior
JaNya Lilly (Baltimore, MD, Lincoln University) registered a double-double to lead Cheyney with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore
Maciyah Washington (Bowie, MD, CCBC Essex) made 10 of 12 free throw attempts and finished with 18 points and three steals, while junior
Nytasia Braxton (Camden, NJ, Southeastern CC) added 15 points, eight assists and led the Wolves with four assists and six steals.

Jireh Kelly (Salisbury, MD, Parkside HS) transitioning from the volleyball court to the basketball court, pulled down nine boards and had a team-best two blocks, senior
Jazmin Walker (Aliquippa, PA, Aliquippa HS) hauled in eight rebounds and sophomore
Sarai Alexander (Landsdowne, PA, Cardinal O'Hara) had a rebound and an assist.
On Sunday, Cheyney could not overcome a barrage of three-point shots from Point Park University (3-2) connected on 14 long balls to pull away for a 90-61 victory as the Wolves fell to 0-2 on the season.
Braxton led Cheyney with 23 points a team-high four assists and grabbed eight rebounds, Washington scored 16 points and Kelly was strong on the boards with a game-high 15 rebounds.
Braxton opened the scoring with a layup and a free-throw, the Pioneers responded by scoring the next nine to take a 9-3 lead. The Wolves fought back with a 7-4 spurt and pulled within 13-10 following a pair of free-throws from Lilly. Point Park then took control with three consecutive triples to pull away and take control.
The lead would reach as high as 30 during the third quarter, but Cheyney would fight back and pull within 16 at the end of the third quarter, closing with a 12-2 run. Braxton keyed the comeback with back-to-back layups, an offensive rebound and put back by Kelly was followed by a Walker basket and a fast-break layup by Washington ended the period and made it a 65-49 contest. Unfortunately the Wolves with only six players available, could not get any closer.
Its finally time for the home opener, Cheyney will host a double-header with the men, on Wednesday night, as they welcome Central Penn University with the ladies scheduled to tipoff at 5:30 PM inside Alfred Cope Hall.
