Slow Start Leads to 48-19 Loss for Football at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Cheyney University football hit the road for a third consecutive week to open the PSAC East schedule Saturday afternoon with a trip to Bloomsburg University. The hosts jumped out to a 20-0 lead before the first quarter was over and went on to defeat the Wolves 48-19 on Danny Hale Field inside Redmon Stadium.

Cheyney (1-3, 0-1 PSAC East) QB Dominick Trautz (Guttenberg, N.J., North Bergen) threw for a career-high 269 yards, a TD and an interception, while connecting with nine different receivers. WR Yvesner Ferdinand (Belle Glade, Fl., Glades Central) caught three passes for 44 yards including his third touchdown of the season and set up Cheyney's first score with a 21-yard catch down to the Huskies one-yard line.

Qmac Quiteh rushed for a game-high 108 yards and scored touchdowns on the first two Bloomsburg (3-1, 1-0 PSAC East), drives to lead the Huskies ground game, which rushed for 277 yards and four touchdowns.

Cheyney gained 170 yards on the ground, RB Brandon French (Brooklyn, N.Y., Midwood) led the Wolves (1-3) with 55 yards rushing, on 12 attempts, and his second TD of the season, RB Devin Miller (Williamsport, Pa., Williamsport) ran for 31 yards on five rushes and closed the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown run. Trautz gained 45 yards rushing, but was sacked five times for 49 yards with a fumble that was returned for a Bloomsburg score.

Bloomsburg took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in 12 plays, capped by a Quiteh four-yard run. The Huskies faced a fourth and one at its own 46-yard line and converted with a two-yard rush by Quiteh en route to taking a 7-0 lead.

RB Damon Williams (Fort Worth, Texas, Boswell) returned the kickoff 32 yards to the Cheyney 37, but the Wolves were forced to punt on its first possession. Michael Allen returned the, 46-yard Brendyn Van Demark (Millvile, N.J., Millville), punt 63 yards to set up the Bloomsburg offense at the Cheyney 22-yard line.

Four plays later Quiteh found the end zone from 15-yards out to make it a 14-0 deficit for Cheyney.

On the Wolves second possession, a Trautz pass was intercepted and returned for a score to make it 20-0, following a missed extra point.

The Wolves offense got going, on the first play of the second quarter, when Trautz found WR Nigel Wiley (Monroe, N.C., Sun Valley) for a 50-yard completion down to the Bloomsburg eight-yard line, but the drive stalled and Wolves had to attempt a 22-yard field goal, but the Alexander Rummel ( Ephrata, Pa., Ephrata) kick was blocked and led to another long scoring drive for the Huskies. Bloomsburg led 27-0 at the half.

The Wolves took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 86-yards in 7 plays, which included a 42-yard catch and run by WR Brandon Joyner (Fairbanks/Alaska, West Valley), a 24-yard rush by French a 21-yard completion to Ferdinand and the one-yard TD run for French.

Cheyney forced a three and out and drove to the Huskies 44-yard line, but were forced to punt. Van Demark pinned the Huskies at the 10.

Bloomsburg faced a third and seven, but QB Chris Palubinsky completed a 37-yard pass, to Jay Popson to change the momentum, which led to another long scoring drive for the Huskies and a 34-7 advantage and put the game away.

Williams had the most productive all-around game of his young career with 35 yards rushing, 12 yards receiving and 138 return yards on seven kickoff returns.

Wiley caught two passes for a team-high 76 yards,  Joyner made three grabs for 68 yards, WR Jowan Lewis-Kearse (Auburn, Ga., Dacula) had a game-high six catches for 44 yards, while RB Zaire Bryant (Trenton, N.J., Trenton) and RB Kevens Duffault (Muhlenberg, Pa., Muhlenberg) made their first career-catches.

DB Gary Brown (Allentown, Pa., Allentown) led Cheyney with five solo and three assisted tackles, LB Chaplin Johnson-Davis (Abington, Pa., Abington) recorded four solo and two assisted stops, S Samuel Anojulu (Allentown, Pa., William Allen) was credited with two solo and four assisted tackles and LB Jamiel Hines (Philadelphia, Pa., Fels) had three solo tackles an assist and a quarterback hurry to lead the Cheyney defense.

Trautz went 20-33 for 269 yards to match his career-high in completions set last week at California, Pa. his TD pass to Ferdinand was the ninth of the season, which is a career-high, topping the eight TD passes in 2015.

The Wolves return to O' Shields-Stevenson Stadium, on Saturday September 30, to host East Stroudsburg University on Family Day with Family Day festivities beginning at 10:00 AM and the kickoff scheduled for 1:00 PM.
