CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Cheyney University women's basketball squad dropped an 83-54 decision to host Johnson C. Smith on the first day of the CIAA/PSAC Challenge Friday night inside Brayboy Gym.
The Wolves, who fell behind 33-19 early in the second quarter, used a 10-0 run to close the deficit to four points, and eventually pulled within three points at 38-35 on a
Drazana Vulic jump shot at the 2:59 mark of the second period.
Six straight from the Golden Bulls pushed the lead out to nine at 44-35, before Vulic found Briana Hedgepeth for a jumper to make it a 44-37 game after 20 minutes.
Johnson C. Smith started the third quarter with an 18-1 run and outscored Wolves 24-4 to put the game out of reach.
Vulic led the Wolves with 10 points, eight of which came during the second quarter run,
Khadijah Pearson and
Jamyra Maye added nine points and four rebounds each and
TaKayla Ellis tied Pearson for team-high with three assists and scored seven points including a three-points shot to add to her school record, which now sits at 111 for her career.
The Wolves committed 41 turnovers, while forcing 27 Golden Bulls miscues, but could only make one basket in the third quarter.
Cheyney is back in action on Saturday against Elizabeth City State University, who dropped a 68-50 decision to Gannon on Friday, with the tip-off scheduled for 2:00 PM.
