Lions WBB Takes Battle of the First

CHEYNEY, Pa – Lincoln University used a 19-2 run to close out the first quarter en route to a 68-41 victory in front of a packed house inside Cope Hall in the annual "Battle of the First" between the HBCU rivals Monday night.

Jr. Takayla Ellis led the Wolves (3-13) with nine points which include two more three-pointers as she raises her career-total to 98, just two behind Rashina Childress who sits in fourth place with 100 triples in her career (2003-05). De'Jah Taylor led the Lions (6-15) with 12 points, six blocks five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The game was close as Cheyeny trailed by only 10-6 after back-to-back layups from so. Marlon Herring, but Lincoln, which connected on its first six shots of the game, took control with a quick five-point run, that was interrupted by another basket by Herring to make it a 15-8 contest, at the 5:22 mark.

The Lions would then close the quarter on a 14-0 blitz to take a 29-8 advantage after the first ten minutes. Lincoln shot 10-of-14 from the field including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Herring led the Wolves with six first period points.

Cheyney could get no closer than 19 the rest of the way.

Herring closed the night with eight points, seven rebounds, three steals and an assist, Ellis also recorded a game-high six assists with two rebounds. Jr. Shania Stamper added seven points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Teira Pendleton grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and tied for game-high with 12 points, She'cquan Bailey scored 11 points for Lincoln with five assists and three rebounds.

The Lady Wolves head back into PSAC action on Wednesday night as they travel to East Stroudsburg for a 6:00 PM tipoff with the Warriors. East Stroudsburg won the first meeting inside Cope Hall 86-52.
