WEST CHESTER, PA. – Jr. TaKayla Ellis scored a career-high 27 points, but the Lady Wolves could not withstand the three-point shooting and rebounding of host West Chester University in a 75-64 loss in PSAC East action inside Hollinger Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
Ellis and accounted for 6 points on two three-pointers in the first two minutes of the game and Cheyney (2-9, 2-9 PSAC E) jumped out to a 12-2 lead at the 7:11 mark of the first quarter. The Lady Wolves carried a 21-13 edge after the first ten minutes.
The Golden Rams (6-9, 6-5 PSAC E) responded with a 26-10 second quarter keyed by the three-point shooting of Camden Boehner 4-of-6 from downtown for 18 points and Madison Torresin with 12 points, to take a 39-31 lead at the break.
Cheyney used a 7-1 run to tie the game at 48-48 with 4:20 to play in the third.So. Dashawna West started the run with a free-throw a layup from So. Marlon Herring cut the deficit to three and Ellis knotted the game at 48-48 with her fifth three-pointer of the game.
The Golden Rams took a 55-53 lead after the third quarter.
After Torresin put West Chester up by four 57-53, the Lady Wolves responded with five straight to take the lead 58-57.
Sr. Taschell Phillips converted a pass from Ellis and was fouled, her free-throw cut the lead to one, then an Ellis jumper put Cheyney ahead 58-57 at the 7:44 mark.
Torresin went on a personal five-point run with a jumper from the top of the key and a three-pointer to put the Golden Rams ahead to stay.
A layup from Phillips mad it a two-point game, but a seven-point run capped by a Torresin three gave West Chester a nine-point advantage and led to the 75-64 victory.
So. Quinniea Gross went 8-of-10 from the line to finish with 14 points, with seven rebounds, two block and three steals. Ellis went 9-of-19 from the field, 5-of-11 from beyond the arc, and 4-o-4 from the line for her career-best 27 points.
Cheyney shot a season best 19-23 (82.6) from the line and forced 25 turnovers.
Torresin tied Ellis with 27 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as West Chester held a 45-34 edge off the glass while making 11-of-25 from beyond the arc to secure its 20
th straight victory over the Lady Wolves.
Cheyney is next in action on Wednesday when Seton Hill University comes to Cope Hall for a PSAC Crossover game with the tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
