LINCOLN, Pa. – The Cheyney University volleyball team easily captured the first set and jumped to an early lead in the second set, but it's never easy to secure victory in the "Battle of the First." The hosts slowly turned the tide, and swept the final three sets, to earn a split in the home and home series, between the HBCU rivals Tuesday night inside Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.
The Wolves (1-5) raced out to a 17-3 lead in the first set and coasted to a 25-15 win. Cheyney then held a 16-9 advantage and seemed poised to take the second set, but the Lions (1-6) reeled off five straight points to close the gap to 16-14. The Lincoln eventually would take its first lead of the match at 22-21, before finishing the set with a 25-22 triumph, to knot the match at a set apiece.
The third set was tied at 19-19, but the Lions closed it out on a 6-to-1 run to take the set 25-20. Lincoln took control early in the fourth set and kept the lead throughout in capturing the fourth set and the match 25-17.
Virshawna Campbell led the Wolves with 15 kills and 11 digs, Chelsea Hutson led the way with 16 digs and added eight kills. Mary Flores topped Cheyney with 20 assists, while Bryanna Taylor added 17 assists and Akia Harris recorded 14 digs.
Mariah Russell paced the Lions with 10 kills and recorded 11 digs, Shanna King was credited with 22 assists and Atarah Lindsey recorded a team-high 16 digs and added seven kills.
Cheyney opens the PSAC season when it travels to take on California, Pa. on Friday night at 7 pm, then heads to Greensburg, Pa., for a match with Seton Hill on Saturday at 1 pm.
