CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Cheyney University women's basketball team received career-days from So.'s Marlon Herring and Briana Hedgepeth, but visiting Gannon University used a 23-9 fourth quarter to complete the comeback in a 67-57 victory in PSAC Crossover action Sunday afternoon inside Alfred Cope Hall.
Herring tallied a career-high 19 points, going 6-10 from the field and 7-9 from the free-throw line, while Hedgepeth made 7-14 shots en route to a career-best performance of 16 points.
The Lady Wolves (0-2, 0-2 PSAC E) jumped out to a 10-0 lead to open the game holding the Knights (1-4, 1-1 PSAC W) without a point until Maggie Mitchell, who finished with a game-high 24 points, connected on her first, of five made, three-point shots to ignite an 8-0 run from Gannon.
Hedgepeth responded with a three of her own and a jumper to propel Cheyney to a 15-8 edge heading into the second quarter.
???????Cheyney held a five point advantage 30-25 on the three-pointer from TaKayla Ellis, but the Knights scored the final four points to close the deficit down to 30-29 at half-time.
???????Hedgepeth scored 11 points and Sr. Taschell Phillips dished out six assists, while Herring registered seven points and five rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
Cheyney broke a 35-35 tie with an 8-2 run keyed by five points from Herring and led 48-44 after three quarters.
A Phillips jumper at the 6:13 mark put Cheyney up 54-51 after Gannon regained the lead at 57-55, a layup by Hedgepeth knotted the game at 57-57 with 2:41 to play.
Kelsey Herbert converted a pass from Mitchell to put the Knights ahead with 2:23 left as Gannon closed the game on a 10-0 run. Mitchell score 18 points in the second half.
Ellis finished with 12 points six rebounds and five assists, Herring grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with her career-best 19 points and added two blocks. Phillips had a career-high eight assists, eight points and grabbed four rebounds.
The Lady Wolves are off until Saturday Dec. 3, when they head to California, Pa. for a crossover contest with the Vulcans. Cheyney will not be back on the Cope Hall floor until Dec. 30, when it hosts East Stroudsburg University in the first game vs a PSAC East opponent.
