LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - The Cheyney University women's basketball team staged a furious comeback Wednesday night, in the annual Battle of the Firsts game at The Lincoln University. The Wolves (0-5) used a 20-7 third quarter advantage to slice a once 18-point lead down to two, heading into the fourth quarter, but the Lions scored the first eight points in the final stanza to pull away for a 65-53 victory inside Manuel Valero Hall.
TaKayla Ellis scored a career-high 16 points, she connected on 4-of-7 from three-point range, to lead three CU players who reached double-figures. Ellis also collected four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Amber Genwright finished with 12 points, a team-best five assists, five rebounds and a steal.
Aerie DeJesus scored 11 points with a 3-of-8 performance from beyond the arc, pulled down seven rebounds, added four assists and two steals.
The Wolves shot 8-for-18 from three-point range, while holding the Lions to just two made three's on the game.
Lincoln led 15-13 after the first quarter, and by just three at 20-17 with 4:47 left in the first half, when it went on a 16-1 run to lead 36-18.
DeJesus hit a three at the buzzer to make the score 36-21 at the break and start the long climb back for the Wolves.
Ellis hit a three to start the third period, then an
Adriene Small basket made it a 10-point game, 36-26 less than a minute into the second half. Three points from
Kyra Hines-Allen, who pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds to go with eight points, and a layup from Ellis cut the deficit to six (37-31) with 4:57 left in the third.
A minute later the lead was seven following an Amani Clark free-throw for Lincoln, but the Wolves cut the lead down to two with a layup from DeJesus, two free-throws from Ellis and three points by Hines-Allen, which made it a 43-41 contest after three quarters.
Amani Clark led the Lions, who improved to 4-2 on the season, with 19 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and three assists. Clark scored 10 points in the decisive fourth period that saw Lincoln finish with a 22-12 edge.
Small led the Wolves with three blocks and pulled down eight rebounds, while
Marlon Herring chipped in with six rebounds off the bench.
Cheyney finally gets to play in front of the home-crowd, on Friday night, when it hosts California, Pa., out of the PSAC West inside Alfred Cope Hall at 5:30 p.m.
