JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Sr.
Aerie DeJesus led Cheyney University women's basketball with 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals, but the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (UPJ) out-scored the Wolves 22-6 in the second period in a 75-57 home victory Sunday afternoon inside the Sports Center.
DeJesus was 5-of-9 from the field including connecting on 3-of-4 from three point range.
Adriene Small chipped in with 10 points and five assists off the bench and
Kyra Hines-Allen scored 10 points for the Wolves (0-3, 0-3 PSAC).
Olivia McCabe led the Mountain Cats (3-2, 2-1 PSAC) with 20 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Olivia Rizzo went 5-for-5 from beyond the arc and finished with 17 points and three steals.
UPJ jumped out to a 7-2 lead to start the game, but the Wolves responded with an 8-1 run to take the lead 10-8.
Hines-Allen scored on a layup to ignite the run, DeJesus and
Shania Stamper each connected from long distance to give the Wolves their first lead of the game with 5:29 to play in the first period.
The Mountain Cats tied the game with a basket and DeJesus made a free-throw making it 11-10 for Cheyney, but UPJ would go ahead for good on a three-point shot with 4:40 left in the first and take a 17-11 lead.
Small stopped the run at seven with a jumper with 35 seconds remaining and cut the lead to two (17-15) with a layup at the buzzer.
UPJ opened the game up with a 19-3 run to begin the second period and held a 39-21 lead at the half.
The teams traded baskets in the second half with the Wolves getting no closer than 14.
Cheyney steps out of conference on Tuesday when it travels to Prince Ann, Maryland for a game with Maryland Eastern Shore at 2 p.m. The Wolves will be playing its third game in four days.
