Box Score TaKayla Ellis paced Cheyney (3-18:3-13) with 14 points and Aerie DeJesus came off the bench to add 12 but it was not enough as the Lady Wolves fell to Mansfield (2-18:1-15) 59-53.
The Lady Wolves owned the lead most of the first half. Cheyney was able to stretch the advantage to six, 18-12 with six minutes to play in the half after a DeJesus three pointer. However Cheyney had to settle on a three point lead, 23-20 at intermission thanks in part to a buzzer beater by Shaniya Stamper as the half came to a close.
With the game tied at 31, Mansfield rattled off seven unanswered points. However, Cheyney was able to cut the lead to two, 40-38 with nine minutes to play. Two and half minutes later the Mansfield advantage was back up to seven. Cheyney was able to cut the lead to three, 49-46 with four minutes to play but could not get any closer. Cheyney was able to hold the Mounties without a field goal the remainder of the contest. However, the Mounties were 11 of 12 from the foul line to secure the victory.
The Mountaineers won the game on the stretch of their second half free throw shooting. Mansfield was 16-20 from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes. The Lady Wolves were only 1 of 3.
The Mounties were led by Tianna Jackson who connected on 11 of 12 second half free throws. She ended the afternoon with 16 points as did Brielle Kelly. Katie Fitzpatrick led all scorers with 20 points.
The Lady Wolves look to regroup Wednesday night at Kutztown. Game time is slated for 5:30 PM.
