Cheyney University Names Cassandra Taylor Head Women's Basketball Coach
Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is proud to announce the hiring of Cassandra Taylor as the new Head Coach of the Women's Basketball program.
A Philadelphia native, Taylor joins the Wolf Pack after serving as Head Coach at the University of Valley Forge, where she led the Patriots through a program rebuild and player development phase. Prior to her time at UVF, she spent five seasons on the staff at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, including the final year as Associate Head Coach. During her tenure, John Jay emerged as a perennial CUNYAC contender, reaching the conference championship game twice and earning an ECAC postseason berth in 2022–23.
Taylor brings a strong background in player development, defensive strategy, and program operations. At John Jay, she spearheaded the team's defensive schemes, coordinated film breakdown and scouting, and oversaw individual workouts. Off the court, she was instrumental in the team's social media and community engagement efforts.
As a former team captain and standout player at John Jay, Taylor averaged nearly 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists per game during the 2016–17 season, reaching double figures in 19 contests and earning a reputation as a high-IQ competitor and leader. Before transferring to John Jay, she starred at Camden County Community College, helping the program earn a top-15 national ranking.
Beyond the sidelines, Taylor has served as a coach for the NYC Heat AAU program and contributes to the media ministry at Monumental Baptist Church in Philadelphia. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Sociology from John Jay and holds two Master's degrees from Concordia University, a Master of Science in Coaching and Exercise Science, and a Master of Arts in Coaching and Athletics Administration.
Coach Taylor's appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Cheyney Women's Basketball as the program continues to grow under her leadership, passion, and deep ties to the Philadelphia basketball community.
